Off-Duty California Officer Arrested for DUI After Passing Naval Base Security

After driving through security at the main gate of a California naval base without stopping, an off-duty San Diego sheriff’s officer was charged with driving under the influence. Sgt. Michael Cruz was a deputy, and security at Naval Air Station North Island shot at him. The base was put on lockdown, but no one was hurt. Cruz, who has worked for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department since 2006, is on paid leave while the department looks into the matter internally.
