CAPE CORAL, Fla. (CNN Newsource/WBBH/WKRC) – A dramatic rescue was caught on body cam when two officers in Florida had to lift up a car in order to save an elderly man trapped underneath it.
“The whole car had fallen on his body,” said Carlos Romero, son-in-law of the man trapped.
Carlos said that he was helping his father-in-law Francisco change the transmission cable on his car. The only thing holding the car up were small ramps by the wheels.
Somehow something went wrong and the car collapsed on Francisco. Carlos immediately called 911 and did all he could to try and help his father-in-law.
“Then I grabbed another jack from that car and that one was better. At least I had the car a little separate from the body,” said Carlos.
That’s when Cape Coral Police arrived just at the right time.
Two officers worked together and picked up the car themselves, allowing Carlos to pull his father-in-law out from underneath.
After being rescued, Francisco was unconscious and just barely breathing.
“He’s got a pulse,” said Carlos to an officer. “He’s got one?” responded the officer.
Francisco was then taken to the hospital. Doctors said that he has seven cracked ribs and some other broken bones, but that the most important part is that he made it out with his life.
“The doctors say it’s a miracle he’s alive,” said Carlos.
All thanks to the two officers who helped save his life.
“If that had continued to weigh on him like that, he probably would’ve lost his life,” said Mercedes Phillips, Cape Coral Police Department.
Francisco is still recovering in the hospital, but his family hopes he will be released soon.
