Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton in ‘recovery mode’ after health scare, daughter says

Five-time Olympic medalist Mary Lou Retton is back home and in “recovery mode” following a bout with a rare form of pneumonia, according to the athlete’s daughter McKenna Kelley.

We still have a long road of recovery ahead of us, but baby steps,” Kelly posted on Instagram Monday.

We are overwhelmed with the love and support from everyone,” she added. “Grateful doesn’t scrape the surface of the posture of our hearts. Thank you Jesus, thank you doctors & nurses, thank you to this loving community of support.”

Retton, 55, had been in an intensive care unit in a Texas hospital earlier this month. She was “fighting for her life” and unable to breathe on her own, her daughter previously said.

Ever since Retton’s illness was made public, funds have been pouring in to help her with her medical bills. As of Monday afternoon, nearly $460,000 had been donated to an online campaign so far.

Her daughter said Retton did not have health insurance.

The West Virginia native captured the nation’s attention at the 1984 Summer Olympics when she won the all-around gold medal in gymnastics, making history as the first American woman to do so.

Retton also won two silver medals and two bronze medals during the Olympics. The performance landed her Sports Illustrated Magazine’s Sportswoman of the Year and a flurry of national attention.

The gymnast went on to work in television and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
