Opening reception for three exhibits set for Dec. 1 at Gadsden Museum of Art

An opening reception for three exhibits is scheduled for Dec. 1 at the Gadsden Museum of Art.

The event will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to a news release from the museum, and light refreshments will be served.

“Barbie’s Dreamhouse,” by visual artist Ali Hval of Iowa City, Iowa, will be displayed in the museum’s Main Gallery on the first floor.

According to the news release, Hval’s work “merges ceramic, fabric, installation and painting,” and reflects her “interest in adornment and the relentless critique and politicization of the body.”

Hval owns a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Alabama and a master of fine arts degree in painting and drawing from the University of Iowa, where she is a lecturer in those disciplines.

“Person Detected” by Michael Swann of Birmingham is already on display in the Leo Reynolds Gallery on the museum’s first floor. It includes examples of oil painting, printmaking and airbrushing, and employs materials used in the automotive industry.

Swann holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Birmingham-Southern College.

“Omage,” featuring portraits and other paintings of historical places, machinery and scenes of everyday life by local artist John McFarland, will be displayed in the Barbara Reed Gallery on the second floor. McFarland expanded his hobby of painting after retirement, according to the news release.

Still on display at the museum are “Amalgamations,” by Abby Henderson, in the Courtyard Gallery; and “Shared Beginnings, Diverse Creations,” by Izabella Janush-Hernandez, Alexa Lee and Sydney Marlin.
