SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women’s tennis team closed out its opening weekend of the spring season on top, sweeping Fordham 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
The Orange (2-0) claimed the doubles point as pairing Miyuka Kimoto and Anastasia Sysoeva took their number two doubles match, followed by duo Shiori Ito and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya winning the number one doubles flight, both ending in 6-1 wins for the Orange. Ines Fonte and Polina Kozyreva paired together to a 6-4 win at the number three doubles spot, finishing doubles play.
Ito grabbed the first singles point for the Orange, defeating Franny Shea 6-1, 6-0 for the number six singles point. Kozyreva was next up, finishing off Xiaowei Hu 6-3, 6-3 in the number two singles slot for the second Syracuse singles point.
Fonte gained the match-clinching fourth point for ‘Cuse in the number four singles spot, taking down Anlin Xie 6-2, 6-2. Sysoeva earned the next win for the Orange, beating Xintong Zhou 6-4, 6-2 in number five singles.
With the match already in hand, Kanapatskaya and her opponent, Eleni Fasoula, moved to a super tiebreaker to decide the match. Kanapatskaya edged out the win, 6-2, 4-6, 15-13, and snagged the second to last point for the Orange in the number three singles spot.
Kimoto and her foe, Raffaela Alhach, went the distance in the number one singles spot. They began a third set in their match before Fonte confirmed the win for Syracuse. Kimoto outlasted Alhach, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, ultimately achieving the final point in the weekend sweep for the Orange.
The Orange return to Drumlins Country Club on Saturday, January 27 for an 11 a.m. matchup against in-state adversary St. Bonaventure. Single court streams will be available on cuse.com.
