Oregon-set hospital comedy renewed for Season 2 on NBC

The first-season comedy, “St. Denis Medical,” only premiered back in November, but it’s proven to be popular enough that NBC has renewed the show for a second season. As The Hollywood Reporter and other entertainment sources are reporting, “St. Denis Medical” is the first of NBC’s new series to be renewed for the 2025-26 season.

“St. Denis Medical” is set at a regional hospital located in the fictional town of Merrick, Oregon. Wendi McLendon-Covey plays Joyce, the executive director of the hospital. Others in the talented ensemble cast include David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, Kahyun Kim, Kaliko Kauahi, Josh Lawson, and Mekki Leeper.

Using a mockumentary format, as did such comedies as “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” “St. Denis Medical” follows the adventures of the overworked staff at the underfunded hospital, as they deal with patients — and each other.

“St. Denis Medical” is created by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, whose resumes include such other workplace comedies as “Superstore” and “American Auto.”

The show is set to return after a holiday hiatus tonight, at 8 p.m. on NBC, with an episode titled, “50 cc’s of Kindness.”

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, through the first six episodes of the show that have aired, “St. Denis Medical” is “averaging a little below 3 million viewers for its initial airing and improves to 5.2 million with a week of streaming and other delayed viewing.”

So far this season, “St. Denis Medical” is NBC’s top new series among viewers aged 18-49. According to NBC, across all platforms, “St. Denis Medical” has reached 21.4 million total viewers so far this season.

As The Oregonian/OregonLive reported, showrunner Ledgin has said he decided to set “St. Denis Medical” in Oregon “for a couple reasons. One is, I just feel like it’s a very underrepresented state. It’s a great and beautiful state that you don’t hear a lot about.”

Though “St. Denis Medical” films in Los Angeles, Ledgin told reporters at the 2024 Television Critics Association summer press tour that “if we get more seasons of the show, we’ll explore more outside the hospital.”

In an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive, McLendon-Covey — whose sister, Shelley McLendon, lives in Portland — said, “I would love to see Merrick, Oregon. I would love to actually go to Oregon, and film there a little bit. I hope we do get to see it. I think Merrick has a lot of interesting things to show us.”

“St. Denis Medical” airs at 8 p.m. Tuesdays on NBC. No cable or antenna? Stream on Fubo, which offers a free trial, or stream the following day on Peacock.
