OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel starting vs. TCU after suffering ‘upper body’ injury

Oklahoma redshirt senior quarterback Dillon Gabriel started vs. TCU on Friday.

Gabriel did not play the second half of Saturday’s 31-24 win over BYU after suffering an “upper body injury” on OU’s final drive of the first half. He was shaken up after the Sooners’ final drive of the second quarter and received treatment from trainers and doctors on the sideline and on his way to the locker room.

On Friday ahead of his return, he participated fully in warmups and wore turf tape on his right arm. Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby spent several minutes meeting with him pregame.

He also participated in Senior Day festivities and was awarded the Don Key Award alongside redshirt seniors wide receiver Drake Stoops and cornerback Woodi Washington.

OU head coach Brent Venables expressed optimism about Gabriel’s status during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“Dillon and Jalil, I feel like both those guys, if they continue to progress throughout the week, they’ll be available this weekend,” Venables said.

Former five-star and freshman Jackson Arnold took Gabriel’s place against the Cougars and completed five of his nine passes for 33 yards. He also rushed eight times for 24 yards.

Venables had announced following OU’s previous game against West Virginia his plan for Arnold to redshirt the remainder of the season, which he can no longer do.

Oklahoma (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) is facing TCU (5-6, 3-5) in Norman on Fox.
