Over 2,800 tennis players headed to Wilmington area for state championships

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The N.C. Combo Doubles State Championships is expected to bring over 2,800 tennis players to the Wilmington area.

“The N.C. Combo Doubles tennis tournament is sanctioned by the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and hosted by the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association. The tournaments will be held over two weekends with at least 1,500 adult players participating the first weekend (Nov. 2-5) and approximately 1,300 players during the second weekend (Nov. 9-12), most of whom are traveling to Wilmington from outside the area,” a Wilmington and Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau announcement states.

The tournament will be held at various tennis facilities in the county, including Althea Gibson Park, Ashley High School, Ogden Park, the Landfall Country Club, Echo Farms Park, Compass Pointe and others.

Winners at each level will be invited to attend the USTA Southern Section Championships.

Spectators are welcomed and can watch for free; you can find the tournament details and schedule online here.

“The money we receive for hosting these tournaments will go right back into helping fund local programs and helping the City and County maintain our public courts. We will be running this tournament at 12 different facilities around the area. We could not do this tournament without the generous support of our local facilities, both private and public. We have close to 100 amazing volunteers from our local USTA leagues that help us run this tournament every year,” said Candy Pegram, community coordinator for the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association.
