An extension of multidisciplinary artist Shabazz Larkin’s circulated collection from The Museum of Presence, “May I Be Brave Enough to Speak My Truth” explores the human body as a canvas for protest and storytelling. Curated in partnership with Clarence Edward, founder of Cë Gallery, the exhibit features a collection of the Nashville-based artist’s beautiful paintings and woven blankets depicting figures in mutual support, a poignant representation of our ancestral bonds and future legacies. These works beautifully encapsulate the essence of Black culture, where pain, hurt and conflict are often transformed into expressions of beauty and resilience.
The captivating visual art exhibit’s opening reception took place at OZ Arts on February 8 where art lovers listened to a special live podcast recording of Shabazz Larkin and Jamel Campbell-Gooch, organizer of Black Nashville Assembly and Southern Movement Committee, discussing the intersection of art and social justice and the role the arts play in community organizing. The conversation will be released by The Museum of Presence, and the exhibit is open now through March 21.
