A global automotive technology company has announced two projects aimed at expanding its facility in Columbus, with the $209.4 million investment set to create 100 jobs in the area.
PACCAR is an industry leader in the design, manufacture, and customer support of premium trucks — such as Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF nameplates — while also constructing advanced diesel engines and distributing truck parts.
“This fantastic investment from PACCAR is further testimony to the strength of the Golden Triangle, our automotive industry, and Mississippi’s vibrant economy,” Governor Tate Reeves said. “I’m thankful for and congratulate the folks at PACCAR and in Lowndes County on this exciting announcement, and I look forward to all that the future holds in store.”
The company released that it will expand its existing Columbus facility by 50,000 square feet to add manufacturing operations at the site, as well as increase operations to meet future emissions requirements for diesel engines.
“PACCAR has produced more than 300,000 PACCAR MX Engines in its world-class engine factory in Columbus, MS, since 2010. The PACCAR MX engine has a design life of one million miles, after which time the remanufacturing process can extend that life another one million miles,” PACCAR Engine Company Plant Manager Todd Wells said. “Engine remanufacturing is good for the environment and provides value to Kenworth and Peterbilt truck owners who appreciate the opportunity to extend the life of their trucks with high-quality remanufactured PACCAR MX Engines.”
The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is providing assistance for on-site building improvements.
“This exciting announcement is the latest reminder of how Mississippi’s efforts to foster economic growth are a vital part of our state’s economic future,” MDA Deputy Executive Director Laura Hipp said. “In addition to creating so many exciting new opportunities for so many individuals, these 100 new jobs will benefit the Golden Triangle Region by building a stronger tax base and supporting local businesses.”
Lowndes County, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and 4 County Electric also are assisting with the project.
“TVA and 4 County Electric congratulate PACCAR on its decision to expand operations and create additional job opportunities and investment in Columbus,” John Bradley, TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development, added. “Supporting economic growth in the region is fundamental to TVA’s mission of service.”
Construction on the addition is slated to begin in December 2023, with the vacant positions set to be filled by 2026.
