SEATTLE — Steve Pool was adored in the Pacific Northwest and beyond as the region’s “most trusted weatherman.” From interns in the KOMO 4 weather center to viewers and his coworkers in the newsroom, Steve made a lasting impression on everyone he met and will be deeply missed.
Following the news of his passing Friday, people flooded social media with memories of Steve. We at KOMO 4 are also sharing our heartfelt memories and his contributions to the Northwest over the years.
KOMO News anchor Molly Shen not only shared the anchor desk with Steve, but also co-hosted many Seattle Children’s telethons throughout the years.
Former KOMO 4 anchor Dan Lewis shared a message about Steve, saying “So many laughs. I cherish the memories.”
Steve graduated from the University of Washington in 1977 and then was hired full-time at KOMO 4. He became our chief weather forecaster in 1984 and went on to inspire other young meteorologists in the business.
Matt Leach was one of Steve’s interns in the KOMO 4 weather center after meeting him for the first time when he was 12 years old as a surprise from his dad. Matt shared on social media that “Steve is the reason I got into the news business!”
Some of my earliest childhood memories involve watching him deliver the forecast.
Matt is now a chief meteorologist in Fort Wayne, Indiana. “To call him my mentor is a huge honor,” Matt wrote about Steve.
Nathan Santo Domingo was another one of Steve’s interns who is now a successful meteorologist. “Working side by side with a Seattle legend for 2.5 months. What more could an aspiring meteorologist ask for?” wrote Nathan on X.
The University of Washington shared on X Steve was “our region’s most trusted weathermen” during his career that lasted 42 years on KOMO 4. Steve retired from television in 2019.
Others in the region shared their thoughts and photos of Steve, including the Seattle Mariners and even Mayor Bruce Harrell.
A Seattle news legend and pioneer, Steve Pool was kind an authentic — he epitomized professionalism.
Steve passed away earlier this week from early onset Alzheimer’s. Steve will forever be in our hearts at KOMO 4.
