Pair of Petoskey tennis players earn all-state honors

PETOSKEY — If there’s anyone around the area that’s been a model of consistency over the last decade, or more, it’s the Petoskey boys tennis program.

The Northmen advanced to their 15th consecutive state championship tournament as a team this season and it’s not hard to see why.

Petoskey again brought a talented lineup to the court and a pair recently picked up all-state honors from the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association.

Elijah Rindfusz of No. 1 singles and Luke Washington of No. 2 singles each earned first team all-state from the MHSTeCA.

Petoskey's Elijah Rindfusz was awarded first team all-state honors recently at his No. 1 singles positon for the Northmen.

Rindfusz closed out the season with a 22-12 record, along with a Big North Conference championship and a regional runner-up finish.

He also pulled in a victory within the No. 1 singles state finals bracket and was also voted the team’s most valuable player after the season.

For Washington, the season closed up with a 17-7 record, along with a regional title at No. 2 singles and BNC title as well.

Rated as the No. 6 seed in the state finals of his bracket, Washington earned a victory out of his bye. Washington also received the coaches award from the team.

Petoskey's Luke Washington pulled in first team all-state recognition after a strong season within the No. 2 singles spot.

Both will return to the lineup next season for the Northmen after their junior season in 2023.

Also within the Petoskey lineup, senior Max Faulkner of No. 1 doubles closed out his career with 62 match wins and two regional championships over the course of 116 matches played. He was handed out the 4-year varsity award by the team.

Petoskey’s Collin Brantly of No. 3 singles also closed the season with the most wins on the team with a 30-5 record and regional title, followed then by No. 4 singles standout Brian Tang with a 29-5 record and regional championship.

Within Petoskey’s lineup, only Faulkner will graduate after the Northmen tied for ninth in Division 3 at the state championships.
