CLAYSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel features a small but talented core of decent wrestlers this season, but the Bulldogs are currently unable to fill three weight classes.
When competing in a dual meet against a solid opponent like Inter-County Conference rival Northern Bedford, that lack of numbers makes for some rough sledding.
Tuesday night’s season-opening dual meet for both teams included four forfeits — including three straight surrendered by Claysburg to close the bout at 121, 127 and 133 pounds — as Northern Bedford posted a 54-24 victory at the Claysburg-Kimmel High School gymnasium.
Northern Bedford won six of the nine bouts that were actually contested — all by fall — while Claysburg posted three falls and also got one forfeit victory in a dual that took only about a half an hour to complete.
The Black Panthers got falls from senior captains and returning District 5 champions Brock Beach at 285 pounds, and Eion Snider at 189, and also received pins from Haidyn Dively to start the match at 139, Aiden Pittman at 152, Aiden Replogle at 107 and Kace Clapper at 114.
Northern Bedford’s forfeit wins went to Wyatt Clouse at 121, Bryson Free at 127 and Paeden Logue at 133.
Dively, a junior, was pinned by Claysburg junior Brodie Soler in this past weekend’s Inter-County Conference Tournament, but Dively turned the tables and pinned Soler in 55 seconds to begin Tuesday’s bout.
“Hayden started off the night for us with a big fall, avenging a loss in the Inter-County Tournament by hitting a nice inside trip for a takedown,” Northern Bedford coach Brian Dutchcot said.
After Claysburg sophomore Parker Knisely pinned Northern Bedford sophomore Kamrin Amick in 2:42 at 145, Black Panthers junior Aidan Pittman ran up a 7-2 lead at 152 before pinning Carter Replogle in 3:36.
Claysburg sophomore Matt Lehman got a forfeit win at 160 to tie the match score at 12-12, and Claysburg’s Hayden Kline used a headlock to pin Nolin Snyder in 1:12 in a matchup of sophomores at 172, giving the Bulldogs a temporary 18-12 lead.
Eion Snider (3-1 this season) built a 6-1 lead against Anthony McGeary at 189 before recording his third fall of the year to tie the score at 18-18, but senior Shawn Weyant put Claysburg back in front, 24-18, by pinning Aiden Korzec in 53 seconds at 215.
“That was a big win by Shawn Weyant,” Claysburg coach Ron Kakabar said. “He’s a strong kid who has been working really hard in the weight room.”
However, Northern reeled off falls in each of the next three matches to take a 36-24 lead prior to getting the three match-ending forfeits.
Beach jacked his season record to 5-1 with his fourth fall of the year, pinning Reece Replogle in 1:22 at 285, before junior Aiden Replogle (3-1 this season) logged his second fall of the season, pinning Blaide Weyant in 71 seconds at 107. Sophomore Kace Clapper pinned Hayden Lamborn in 51 seconds in the last contested bout of the night at 114.
“Kace Clapper has been doing well for us, he’s been aggressive in every position, and he had another good match tonight,” Dutchcot said after Clapper improved his season record to 4-2 with his third fall of the year. “Brock Beach, Wyatt Clouse (now 4-0 this season), Aiden Pittman (4-2), and Reppy (Aidan Replogle) have all been performing very well.
“Beach and Eion Snider are our senior co-captains and we can lean on them pretty heavily,” Dutchcot added.
Clouse was an ICC Tournament champ at 121, while Aidan Replogle and Eion Snider were both tournament runners-up at 107 and 189, respectively. Beach registered another fall Tuesday night after logging three en route to a third-place finish in the tournament.
“It was a good match for me tonight,” Beach said. “I kept the pace up in the first period, worked my stuff, and got the pin.”
Knisely improved his season record to 4-2 for Claysburg with his third fall of the year on Tuesday, after placing third in the ICC tourney.
“He has been really focused in the wrestling room,” Kakabar said of Knisely. “We expect big things from him.”
