Park City Performing Arts heats up a ‘Frozen’ sing-along

Park City Performing Arts invites families to “Let It Go” at the “Frozen” Sing-Along on Monday.

The event, which includes a screening of the film, costume contest and goody bag, will start at 6 p.m. at the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts, said Executive Director Ember Conley.

“We are starting the evening early because we realize there will be families coming in,” she said. “So they can come to the sing-along and get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour.”

The sing-alongs feature the full film with subtitled song lyrics, according to Conley.

“The sing-alongs are interactive,” she said. “When people walk in for these events, they receive a goody bag, and throughout the sing-along you get to utilize the items in the bag when a certain lyric is sung or a certain scene comes up.”

Some of the goodies may include clappers, kazoos and things like that, Conley said.

“It’s really fun,” she said. “The kids love it, and actually parents really love it, too. There is a clean-up after the event for our volunteers. So I always try to give them extra love when we have a sing-along.”

One of the evening’s highlights is the costume contest, Conley said.

“We encourage you to come dressed up, and we give out prizes for the best costume,” she said. “You also have to admit when kids dress up in their Elsa dresses, they look so cute, and it’s such a blast.”

Prizes include Park City Performing Arts show tickets, of course, free coffee at Hugo’s Coffee and more, according to Conley.

“It’s just a really great family time,” she said.

Sing-alongs have become one of Conley’s favorite events at Park City Performing Arts.

“From a programming standpoint, the sing-along is such an easy show to put on that brings so much joy, especially at this time of the year,” she said. “The world-class theater that we have, the Eccles Center that is the Sundance Film Festival’s premiere theater, is really the perfect location for these sing-alongs.”

Park City Performing Arts programmed debuted the sing-along last with Michael Gracey’s 2017 hit, “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman.

“Throughout the year, we get contacted by different agencies who provide these films and experiences,” Conley said. “Because last year was so successful, we were able to connect with the premiere sing-along provider.”

After “Frozen,” Park City Performing Arts will present another sing-along with Randal Kleiser’s 1978 hit, “Grease” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, on March 1.

“We’re always looking forward to doing these events,” Conley said.

Conley has fond memories of watching “Frozen.”

“When the film first came out, my son was 4 years old,” she said. “Two of his best buds were girls who would dress up and watch the movie, and I fell in love with it. I think it’s such a well-done movie, and the music, of course, is beautiful.”

Each year, Park City Performing Arts partners with a different nonprofit or Park City-based organization on the sing-alongs, Conley said.

This year, the nonprofit is the preschool, PC Tots.

“We are offering $5 tickets to PC Tots’ families, so they and their children can enjoy a low-cost evening,” she said.

Conley, a former Park City School District superintendent who holds a doctorate degree in education, has reserved a special place in her heart for PC Tots.

“My background is with kids and families, and for many years, I was a working, single mom with my kids in daycare,” she said. “So I feel partnering with PC Tots is an example of bringing the arts to life for people in our community who may not have many opportunities to do so. You never know how one moment of exposure to the performing arts will change a child’s life.”
