Led by freshman Parker Mariencheck’s undefeated singles run, the Georgia men’s tennis team finished with records of 10-10 in singles and 3-8 in doubles in the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend in Atlanta’s Byers Tennis Complex.
“Parker Mariencheck continues to work hard every day and he has improved in many areas,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “This weekend, he excelled and made great progress.”
During day one of the invitational, Georgia had five of its seven players win singles matches and two Bulldog duos pick up doubles wins.
With his 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory over No. 46 Nemanja Malesevic, Georgia’s Thomas Paulsell earned a new highest-ranked singles win. Freshman Cyrus Mahjoob defeated Jim Ji of Yale 6-2, 6-4 while Mariencheck also took his match against Marshall Landry of Mississippi State in 6-4, 6-4 straight sets.
Ryan Colby earned the fourth singles win for Georgia on the day, beating Eric Li from Yale 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Colby is now 6-4 in singles on the year.
Colby and Niels Ratiu won their doubles match 8-6 over Liberty’s Thando Longwe-Smit and Rafael Marques Da-Silva. Filipe Costa and Mahjoob won 8-6 for their second victory together.
Georgia picked up one win each in singles and doubles on day two.
Mariencheck won his sixth season singles match after defeating Liberty’s Ernst Gouws by a single-set 6-4, 6-1 result. After a breaker, Colby and Costa won their first match together, defeating Theo Dean and Eric Li of Yale by an 8-7(3) score.
On day three, Mariencheck notched a three-set victory (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) against Georgia State’s Max Weir, going undefeated in singles for the Georgia Tech Invitational. He has now won five of his last six matches and sports a 9-3 overall record.
The Bulldogs were unable to secure any doubles wins on day three, but singles action saw some victories.
Colby’s three-set win (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) marked his seventh win of the fall. Two other freshmen also picked up wins on Sunday afternoon. Mahjoob’s straight-set win put his personal record at 2-1 over the weekend and 11-5 on the year. With a 6-2, 6-3 victory, Ratiu picked up his fifth win of his college career.
At the invitational and their final event of the fall, Georgia finished with a 10-10 record in its 20 singles matches and 3-8 in the 11 doubles matches. The team’s next tournament will be the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, SC from Jan. 5-7, 2024.
