
SAN DIEGO, CA — A pedestrian was struck by a car and suffered life-threatening injuries over the weekend in San Diego, authorities said Monday.
The crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday when a 35-year-old man was walking southbound across University Avenue along the east side of 54th Street in the Chollas Creek neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department. At the same time, a 69-year-old man was driving northbound on 54th Street in a 2016 Toyota Camry.
The pedestrian entered the intersection of 54th Street and University Avenue on a green light. Halfway through the intersection, the pedestrian turned right and started crossing the intersection at an angle, Officer John Buttle said. He stepped in front of the car and was struck.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital for treatment of a brain bleed, fractured left fibula and liver laceration, Buttle said.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, which remained under investigation, Buttle said.
