Penguins Collect Win Over Binghamton In Season Opener


The Youngstown State men’s tennis team opened the dual season with a 7-0 win over Binghamton on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis.

The Penguins (1-0) picked up the victory in head coach Kody Duncan‘s debut. Binghamton drops to 0-2 on the year.

YSU won two of the three doubles contests to clinch the point. Winning at No. 3 was David Alvarez Moreno and Harry Fouzas by a score of 6-4. After the Bearcats won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, Onder Balci and Nishant Dabas clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

In singles, Fouzas picked up the Guins’ first win by beating Zubin Omar by scores of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 3, Dabas cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kyle Weekes. At No. 2, Nathan Favier clinched the dual win with a 6-4, 6-3 while soon after at No. 6, Will Rassat claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Andre Ajed.

YSU battled back for three-set wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. At No. 1, Clement Mainguy picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory. He won the final two points of the supertiebreak to win the decision. At No. 4, Balci lost his first set 6-0 before winning the second 7-6. In the third set he won 10-4 to claim the win.

The Penguins return to action on Friday when they host Butler at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
