We are thrilled to announce that the Peninsula School District Board of Directors has once again been honored with the prestigious Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Board of Distinction Award.
The WSSDA Board of Distinction Award is a recognition of the outstanding contributions and dedication of school boards across the state of Washington. Our Board’s continuous commitment to the welfare of our students and the advancement of our district has set a shining example for other educational institutions to emulate.
Addressing Opportunity Gaps
One of the cornerstones of our board’s efforts has been the diligent pursuit of opportunity gap reduction within our district. As part of our strategic plan, they initiated a comprehensive review of data from multiple systems to identify these gaps.
Opportunities for early learning were limited in some areas within our boundary, but the board took proactive steps to rectify this. They directed the opening of two transitional kindergartens based on the Norwegian Outdoor Barnehagen model, in partnership with Gig Harbor’s Sister City, Bodø, Norway. This innovative approach places a strong emphasis on outdoor access and holistic wellness, offering our students a unique learning experience.
Championing Arts and STEAM Education
Our board’s commitment to a well-rounded education extends to the arts. Several elementary schools, including Minter Creek, Discovery, and Purdy, have been designated as Arts Impact schools. This was achieved through the incorporation of both performing and visual arts in every classroom thanks to a grant from Arts Impact.
Furthermore, Pioneer Elementary received Washington state and federal recognition for Green Schools. This is a testament to our district’s commitment to holistic and environmentally responsible education.
Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
Understanding the importance of diversity, equity, and belonging in education, our board took proactive measures to ensure every student’s sense of belonging. Survey data revealed varying levels of belonging across different age groups. In response, the board initiated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for administrators, with a specific focus on BIPOC stakeholders and communities of poverty. These efforts were incorporated into school implementation plans, ensuring that student voices and parental outreach were central components.
Empowering Parental Involvement
Recognizing the pivotal role of parental involvement in a child’s education, our board sponsored several crucial parent advisory teams. These groups were formed based on data from the strategic planning process and family feedback. The Special Education Parent Advisory Council and the 100% Reading at Standard Task Force have made significant strides in addressing qualitative data and systemic issues.
Technology and Fiscal Responsibility
In addition to their commitment to academic excellence, our board has taken significant steps to provide our students and teachers with the technology resources they need. This is aimed at fostering innovation and creating healthy digital citizens.
To address fiscal challenges, the Board initiated a 6-year Safety & Security and Technology Levy ballot measure. The success of this measure amidst fiscal challenges underscores the unwavering support of our community. These funds will be instrumental in maintaining safety, security, and technological advancements.
Navigating Challenges with Vision and Foresight
Despite facing a funding cliff and fiscal challenges, the board has remained resilient and forward-thinking. They’ve conducted thorough analyses and made tough decisions to downsize while maintaining a commitment to academic excellence. The reorganization of the central office and open communication have played a crucial role in achieving a balanced budget.
An Exemplary Model for All
Their achievements, recognized with the WSSDA Board of Distinction Award, serve as an inspiration for other school districts and boards. As they continue to align internal and external operations, our community can look forward to a future where every student receives the support they need for continuous improvement and success.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Peninsula School District Board of Directors for this well-deserved recognition. Their dedication to our students and community is inspiring, and we are excited to see how their continued leadership will shape the future of education in our district.
