HERSHEY, Pa. — The 2022 Penn State Dairy Nutrition Workshop will be held Nov. 6 and 7 at the Hershey Lodge, 325 University Drive, Hershey, offering workshops and practical sessions providing applied dairy nutrition information.

This dynamic two-day event is designed to provide applied dairy nutrition information to nutritionists and dairy feed industry professionals. The primary emphasis of the main session is milk fat depression, milk and commodity market pricing, and updates to the new Cornell nutrition model.

Melissa Cantor, Ph.D., assistant professor of Precision Dairy Science at Penn State and coordinator of the conference, said, “This conference has a well-deserved reputation for providing the most cutting edge information which can be put to immediate use for the benefit of producers. The array of speakers is outstanding. From speakers to panel discussions to breakout sessions, there is a wealth of information to develop an understanding of applying the most up-to-date knowledge.”

Nearly two dozen break-out sessions over the two days allow attendees to tailor topics of interest to them, including many presentations by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team. The Dairy Team’s emphasis will be on two themes: forage topics and using precision livestock farming date to better understand the nutritional status of dairy cows. Special presentations will be given by Alfi-Milk (Afi sensor), Merck (Cowsense/SCR), and Select Sires (Cow Manager. Other topics range from communicating effectively with other professionals and employees to understanding specific health issues in a herd. Selection may be made at registration.

The pre-conference, sponsored by Kemin, will focus on amino acid formulation and the effects on dairy cow rations. The post-conference, sponsored by Vetagro, will present information on fatty acid in the diet and effects on cow health. Both are included as part of registration.

Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with over two dozen trade show exhibitors, including at an ice cream social on Wednesday sponsored by Merck. There is also time to visit with exhibitors each day, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A new feature at this year’s workshop is the availability of complimentary wifi, courtesy of Selko.

Participants can earn up to 16 American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) credits based on sessions attended. Certification exams for ARPAS will be offered, and ARPAS members are invited to participate in the Northeast Chapter meeting on Wednesday with a special presentation.

The cost of registration for the two-day workshop is $200, with no charge for Penn State students, $90 for non-Penn State students. Dinner is $10.00; breakfast on November 7 is $8. Two lunches are included as are breaks, one sponsored by Vetagro and one sponsored by Kemin.
