People share experiences with incarceration at Golden Hour Books

Formerly incarcerated people will share their stories at Golden Hour Books on Feb. 6.

“We don’t often get to listen to the perspective of people who have been previously incarcerated,” said Golden Hour owner Sara Gelston Somers. “We hear one narrative about them, and it’s important to listen to their own words.”

About 49,000 Hoosiers are incarcerated in state and federal prisons, local jails, juvenile justice facilities or through involuntary commitments, according to a 2023 report from the nonprofit Prison Policy Initiative.

Organized by the nonprofit Storytelling Arts of Indiana, the event will feature India Madison and LaQuera Miles, who will discuss life in prison and adjusting to the outside after release.

Golden Hour will also have a selection of titles about the prison system and information about how to help local organizations working with formerly incarcerated people.

The event will run from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the northside bookstore, 5208 N. College Ave. It is free and no RSVP is required.
