Philly college basketball takes its rightful place at center stage during the brand-new Big 5 Classic. Stakes are raised in a major way this year with the addition of Drexel University to the storied locals-only basketball conference and the launch of a brand-new tournament format to crown the next Big 5 champion. The six teams (Temple, La Salle, Drexel, Villanova, St. Joseph’s and Penn) have been separated into three-team pods, where they’ll battle it out round-robin style in the weeks leading up to a super-sized day of ball at the Wells Fargo Center. A Saturday tripleheader sees the top teams from each pod play one another for the Big 5 title, while the second- and third-place teams from each pod meet for third- and fifth-place consolation prizes.
