SAN ANTONIO – City officials have just unveiled some beautiful new lighting to brighten up downtown!

On Wednesday, The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts and Culture announced the completion of ‘City Lights,’ beautifully lit sculptures placed at around City Tower by artist team Robert Diaz de Leon, Ronny Eckels and Ryan Takaba. (R&R&R)

“This project speaks to its surroundings, blending history, culture, native plants and wildlife, and lighting to reflect San Antonio’s city lights,” said Krystal Jones, Director of the Department of Arts & Culture. “The new sculptures not only enhance the City Tower entrance to warmly welcome visitors seeking City services, but they also celebrate the unique spirit and artistry of our community.”

The sculptures were built to pay ohmage to the city’s historic architecture, including the native Yucca blossoms symbolizing protection, and steel and bronze butterflies and vines, inspired by Queen’s Wreath, pay tribute to local flora.

“We hope that ‘City Lights’ inspires visitors to downtown with this design that is rooted in San Antonio’s historic traditions while looking towards the City’s bright future,” the artist team R&R&R said in a joint statement. “Just like the series of butterflies that rest atop the sculptures, we hope people are drawn to their light.”

The sculptures are visible near the entrances to City Tower, as well as Frost Bank Tower in north Downtown.
