Plant-Based Diets Are Protective Against COVID-19

Vegan and vegetarian diets are associated with lower odds of severe COVID-19, according to a new study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health. Those who had higher intakes of vegetables, legumes, and nuts, and lower intakes of dairy and meats also had lower odds of COVID-19 infection.1 Previous research in health care workers similarly found that plant-based diets were associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection and moderate-severe disease.2 Diet quality is also important, with an emphasis on healthful plant-based foods.3
