Police investigate illegal car caravan, drifting over the weekend

CHICAGO — Police in Chicago and Evergreen Park are investigating an illegal car caravan and drifting event over the weekend.

The car caravan happened around 11 p.m. Saturday and stopped at various intersections to drift.

At the intersection of 103rd and California in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, people lit gasoline into a ring of fire and shot off fireworks.

Ken Jones was asleep when it all started.

“It was mass chaos,” Jones said. “There were several cars spinning around in circles. A couple hundred people standing out here watching.”

He watched out the window and said within minutes, Chicago and Evergreen Park police arrived.

The people and cars scattered.

“After the police showed up, they all went down California but there’s no way to get out that way,” a person who didn’t want to be identified said.

Some of the cars turned back around and some drove through yards and the Ridge Country Club to scape.

Residents who live in the area hope they won’t be back.

“I don’t think there’s anywhere appropriate for this,” Jones said.

An Evergreen Park police squad was hit by a driver involved but no one was inside the squad car at the time.

19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea said two teens were arrested and several vehicles were impounded.
