There’s no shortage of less-than-upbeat portraits of Portland in the national media these days, but a recent “Today” show segment spotlighted the Rose City as a top destination for solo travelers this summer.
On the May 17 “Today 3rd Hour,” Travel + Leisure editor-in-chef Jacqui Gifford shared some suggestions with hosts Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer.
Gifford began by advising solo travelers to be prepared, do research about where they were visiting, stay connected by letting family and friends know where they were going, and to embrace the freedom of solo travel.
Dreyer asked Gifford what a good destination might be “for those who are craving a little bit of adventure.”
“We are suggesting Portland, Oregon,” Gifford said. “Portland’s a great city.” She mentioned singled the “great food scene,” “creative culture,” the “amazing” coffee scene, “and it’s a beautiful, walkable downtown.”
Gifford went on to praise the monthly First Thursday art events, and said, “It’s also great for nature and adventure. This is the warmer season, not the rainy season, so if you want to take a road trip, go on the historic Columbia River Highway,” and see the Columbia River Gorge, “as well as what they call Waterfall Alley,” the series of waterfalls that includes Multnomah Falls.
For hotels, Gifford recommended The Hoxton, which is located in Old Town. Gifford mentioned that rooms start from $100 a night, and the property includes “two restaurants on site, a speakeasy” and “lots of cool local art.”
The other solo travel destinations Gifford discussed in the segment were Greenpoint, New York, and Dallas, Texas.
