The College of Nursing’s Institute for Palliative and End of Life Care will host a webinar titled “Praying for a Miracle: Communication Strategies for Health Professionals When Addressing Patient’s Spiritual Beliefs,” on Tuesday, Nov. 28, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. 

The event will feature Dr. Sarah Byrne-Martelli, who has served as a palliative care and hospice chaplain since 2002. She is the senior chaplain for the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Division of Palliative Care and is on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School’s Center for Palliative Care.

Health care professionals often find themselves at a crossroad of medical decision-making, religious coping and spiritual discernment. When our patients and families are focused on trusting the divine and hoping for a miracle, how can we best support them? How can we navigate complex medical cases while working as a team to provide ethical, compassionate and respectful care?  

Through case studies and a published communication framework, Byrne-Martelli will engage participants in ways to improve care for patients who utilize spiritual beliefs when faced with serious illness.
