Wauwatosa police say an officer tried to stop an SUV that didn’t have license plates. They later learned it had been reported stolen.”He went to stop the vehicle. The vehicle took off, started speeding away from the officer at a high rate of speed. So the officer initiated a pursuit to stop the car when the driver kept going and began driving recklessly,” said Sgt. Abby Pavlik, Wauwatosa police public information officer.Pavlik said the officer quickly called off the chase, deciding it was not safe to continue.”The whole pursuit lasted about 45 seconds,” Pavlik said. “Our officers continually reevaluate a pursuit as it’s going. Is it desirable? What is the safety of the community? Was the safety of the officer, the driver, etc. And decided this was not worth it. And so he pulled over and ended the pursuit.”The driver kept driving, eventually crashing into Mogensen’s car. Surveillance video shows the driver in the stolen car run from the scene, jumping a fence to get away. Milwaukee police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection to the deadly crash on Friday.Mogensen died at the scene. Heartbroken neighbors said she was looking forward to being a mother.”They were trying to start a family. And so, you know, that was what they wanted in life. You know, like I said, as a young couple. So it’s just tragic to have that all yanked away,” Panaro said.Investigators said Mogensen’s husband showed up to the crash scene, just blocks away from their home, and found paramedics performing life-saving measures on his wife.”He’s now mourning the loss of not only his wife, but the future that he had with his wife and the child, his unborn child. I mean, to me, it’s a tragic loss of life,” Dolan said.
