Preparing for the OUC Orlando Half Marathon: Nutrition and training tips
WESH 2’s Sheldon Dutes, Stewart Moore and Michelle Imperato are all logging the miles to be ready for December 2.
DAY AS THE ORLANDO HALF MARATHON IS NOW FIVE WEEKS AWAY. MICHELLE, SHELDON AND STEWART ARE ALL LOGGING MILES TO BE READY FOR DECEMBER 2ND. RUNNING HALF MARATHON OR ANY DISTANCE CAN BE A CHALLENGE. AND MANY TIMES IT’S WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK BEFORE THE RACE THAT CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. OUR FRIENDS AT TRACK SHACK SHOWED STEWART MOORE HOW TO FUEL UP WHEN TRAINING AND ALSO ON RACE DAY. WE ARE AT TRACK SHACK AND WE ARE TALKING NUTRITION AND BETSY HUGHES JOINS US NOW. BETSY, OBVIOUSLY DURING A RACE EVERYBODY THINKS OF, I NEED A WATER BREAK, BUT WHEN YOU’RE RUNNING A HALF MARATHON, YOU MAY NEED A SNACK TO TAKE US THROUGH WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THEY GO INTO A RACE. ALL RIGHT. SOUNDS GOOD. NOW WE GOT TO BACK UP A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT TRAINING, MILES, TO DO. AND AS YOU BUILD THOSE MILES, AS YOU GET CLOSER TO THE HALF MARATHON, THEY INCREASE. SO IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT NOT JUST TO HYDRATE PROPERLY, BUT ALSO TO GIVE YOUR BODY THE RIGHT NUTRITION. IT NEEDS. SO I HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS FOR YOU. YES. BEFORE YOU GO OUT FOR A LONG RUN, DO YOU EAT ANYTHING? I DO NOT EAT ANYTHING BEFORE I GO FOR A RUN. HOW ABOUT COFFEE? ARE YOU A COFFEE GUY? I DO NOT DRINK COFFEE BEFORE. I GO FOR A RUN. ALL RIGHT. I DON’T DRINK COFFEE AT ALL. OH, WOW. OKAY, SO YOU’RE ACTUALLY IN THE MINORITY BECAUSE CAFFEINE IS A LOT OF RUNNERS, FRIEND. BUT IT CAN ALSO BE NOT SO MUCH YOUR FRIEND, IT CAN GIVE YOU BATHROOM ISSUES. SO ACTUALLY, YOU’RE GOOD. YOU’RE GOOD. IS THAT WHY THE PORTA POTTY LINE IS ALWAYS LONG IN THE BEGINNING? OH, DEFINITELY. THESE ARE ELECTROLYTES, BUT THEY’RE ALSO COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES. SO IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. ONE THING WE ALWAYS STRESS IS DON’T MIX BRANDS ON YOUR RUN, WHETHER IT’S YOUR RACE OR YOUR PRACTICE RUNS. SO IF YOU’RE A GEL PERSON, THERE’S TONS OF GELS ON THE MARKET. SOME WITH CAFFEINE, SOME WITH NO CAFFEINE. YOU’RE NOT A CAFFEINE GUY. YOU NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE CAFFEINE. IT CAN REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO TRAIN AND EAT THESE TYPES OF PRODUCTS BEFORE YOU GET TO RACE DAY? WELL, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT. AND A BIG TIP IS NOTHING NEW. RACE DAY. SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO TRAIN ONCE YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR BODY, TRAIN WITH WHAT YOU WANT TO USE ON THE COURSE. LAST THING I HEARD YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT THIS WAFFLE THING. WHAT IS THE. OH, YEAH, WHAT IS THE WAFFLE? SO THIS IS LIKE A SOLID, BUT BUT IT’S A YUMMY AND IT’S A LITTLE MESSY ON THE RUN, BUT IT’S A GREAT PICK ME UP DURING THE DAY. FOR INSTANCE, THE DAY BEFORE YOUR LONG RUN. THIS WOULD BE A GREAT MIDDAY SNACK FOR YOU AND YOU’LL THE DAY BEFORE. SURE. AND YOU’RE JUST YOU’RE JUST GETTING YOUR BODY READY. YOU DON’T WAIT TILL THAT MORNING BEFORE YOU DO YOUR RUN. YOU NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT IT SEVERAL DAYS IN ADVANCE. LET ME ASK YOU THIS ONE LAST THING. EVERYBODY KNOWS THE TERM AND THE PHRASE CARBO LOAD, THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RACE. HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU EAT THE RIGHT NUTRITION BEFORE YOU GO OUT THERE? SO CARBINE IS IS OKAY. AGAIN, IT’S IT’S YOUR STOMACH. YOU GOT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. AND OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE REALLY FOUND THAT IT’S BETTER TO BE A LITTLE MORE PROTEIN CARB. YOU DON’T NEED TO OVER CARB. IT GETS YOUR STOMACH TO EAT ALL THE SPAGHETTI YOU CAN FIND. NO. YEAH, YOU’LL BE TOO FULL THAT NEXT MORNING. ALL RIGHT. AND DON’T EAT TOO LATE. SO THE NIGHT BEFORE, DO YOU WANT TO HAVE AN EARLY DINNER? BECAUSE YOU’RE GETTING UP EARLY IN THE MORNING TO GO TO THE RACE, SO YOU WANT TO BE ON IT? PRETTY MUCH. YOU WANT EVERYTHING DIGESTED. SO DON’T EAT TOO LATE. ALL RIGHT, BETSY, GIVE US ALL THE TIPS THAT WE NEED TO KNOW BEFORE RACE DAY AND DURING RACE DAY. THE TRAINING FOR TRACK SHACK ALWAYS CONTINUE. AS FOR THE HALF MARATHON, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE READY TO GO. WHEN
