GIRLS BASKETBALL TOP 10
(Records through Monday, Dec. 4)
1. St. Anthony (6-1): The Saints move into the No. 1 spot. They will play at No. 6 Downey and host South Gate this week. Senior guard Ryann Bennett, the team’s leading scorer at 14.7 points per game, signed with UC Davis.

2. Paramount (6-2): The Pirates went 1-1 last week. They lost 74-49 to Orange Lutheran and beat Hillcrest 88-21 on Friday. Paramount will host No. 7 Los Alamitos on Wednesday.

3. Lynwood (1-5): The Knights are on a four-game losing streak. All four losses have been against quality opponents: Sage Hill, Bishop Montgomery, Ontario Christian and Redondo.

4. Long Beach Poly (1-0): The Jackrabbits tipped off their season with a 62-32 win against Brea Olinda on Monday. Senior forward Brooklyn Taylor (Cal State Bakersfield signee) had 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first of what could be many double-doubles this season. Poly will play Mater Dei on Wednesday. A strong showing would likely help Poly rise in next week’s rankings.

5. Lakewood (6-1): The Lancers beat Fountain Valley 64-40 on Monday. Junior guard Nyemah King and senior forward Cristina Jones are one of the most dynamic duos in the area.

6. Downey (6-3): The Vikings went 3-0 last week in the Villa Park Shootout tournament. Senior guard Olivia Vaughn was named to the all-tournament team and was named this week’s Press-Telegram Girls Athlete of the Week.

7. Los Alamitos (6-3): The Griffins went 1-2 last week. Los Alamitos has a big showdown at No. 2 Paramount on Wednesday.

8. Gahr (7-0): The Gladiators have area wins against Compton, Artesia and Bellflower. Gahr will host Millikan on Dec. 11.

9. Whitney (5-0): The Wildcats have a quality win against Crean Lutheran and this week will play area rival Norwalk and Workman.

10. St. Joseph (7-0): The Jesters have area wins against Valley Christian and Artesia.
