Prince William Co. leaders approve Devlin Technology Park data center despite opposition

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors voted early Wednesday morning to approve zoning for a controversial data center.

That vote on the Devlin Technology Park in Bristow happened early morning after an all-night meeting that began at 7:30 Tuesday.

Officials said the project would add up to nine large data centers to the area.

Neighbors have complained about the potential noise and loss of green space and at the meeting community members spoke out against the supervisors.

“I’ve heard people tell me, ‘You’re taking years of my life.’ There are people on blood pressure medication because of you. There are people concerned they’ll have heart attacks because of you, but you know most of what I’m hearing? ‘We’re moving,’ Bethany Kelly, from the Brentsvilledistrcit said fighting tears. “We are leaving Prince William County and we will not look back.”

Also in opposition, Coles District Supervisor Yesli Vega said, “Why is it far worse? Because it’s going to absolutely impact your quality of life. It will. And I know without a shadow of a doubt, and I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again till they get sick and tired of hearing it, they would never ever ever ever vote to put seven to nine data centers behind their backyard.

Vega said the proposal is “sickening and it’s infuriating.”

Despite the overwhelming opposition from residents, the board approved rezoning the land for the technology park.

“You are creating havoc because you know you won’t be unelected because of the Democratic demographics of your districts,” a Gainsville district resident told the supervisors.

The facility would be less than 100 feet from houses that are currently in the area.

Next month, the board will take up the much larger nearly 1,800-acre Digital Gateway rezonings on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
