In 2022, the “30 by 30” law was signed by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, establishing a goal to protect 30% of New York State’s land and inland waters by the year 2030, and the Department of Environmental Conservation has until July 1, 2024 to prepare a plan.
The plan must show how much of New York State’s lands and waters are currently conserved and how much remaining land will need to reach conservation status in order to meet the 30% goal. Although it is a state goal, it ties into a similar federal goal of 30% of the country and shorelines preserved.
The nonprofit organization Protect the Adirondacks has analyzed the land usage of New York State and determined that around 20% of New York State’s land and waters are currently protected in some way. Total land is approximately 6.2 million acres.
If that number is accurate, the state must save another 3.2 million acres.

The Adirondack Park contains large tracts of land that could be considered for protection in the following years in order to reach this goal, whether that is through an addition to the New York Forest Preserve or by a conservation easement, Protect the Adirondacks believes.
