American author and cartoonist Scott Adams is attributed to the statement ‘Technology will definitely solve all our problems, but in the process it will create brand new ones. But that’s O.K. because the most you can expect from life is to get to solve better and better problems’.
As the automotive industry evolves, in a manner like never before, there are totally new technology offerings that promise to redefine mobility. Autonomous Driving (AD), and the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) pave technology path to it, for example.
Warming up to autonomous trucking
When it comes to ADAS, we usually think of cars getting those cool features like AEB, LKA etc. But trucking could benefit too from the emerging technology suite. While it can contribute to safer trucking, and also lower emissions, AD technology can also help tackle the driver shortage challenge which is a global challenge. Find out in the following story how and why Scania, part of the Volkswagen-owned Traton Group, is driving towards autonomous transportation.

Hot trend, cold IIHS results
As the ADAS trend gets hotter this year, more OEMs are set to put them in more models. In India, ADAS is a relatively new trend, and a strong brand differentiator too. In the USA, in what also is a little surprising, ADAS features didn’t quite impress the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), ‘an independent, non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes’.
14 systems were tested from the ADAS suite, installed in models from some of the biggest names. Here’s how they fared, and what some of the OEMs involved reacted.

AI’s influence in the journey to AD
The global ADAS trend is also expected to pave the way for AD to become a part of the driving environment in regions globally. In that journey, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a crucial role to play. And, more so for generative AI. Learn about it, and more about driverless car technology development, from Sven Lanwer, XC expert and head of the Driver Experience, Bosch, in the following interview with ETAuto’s Deepanshu Taumar.

‘World’s first’ composite ladder chassis
Electrification, the other global megatrend, is also pushing the technology boundaries of lightweighting, an ‘evergreen topic’ in the automotive industry. Every gram saved has a positive bearing on the driving range of an EV, which means saving many kilograms can help address driving anxiety and also lead to better adoption rate of EVs.
As disruption and innovation become the name of the game in the industry, perhaps more so in the startup space, here’s a startup, founded by two former ISRO engineers, which plans to get a share in the small commercial vehicle (SCV) market. Its key pitch will be what is claimed to be the world’s first composite ladder chassis, a technology that may also be licenced out. Details in the story below.

More plastics to replace metals
It’s not only EVs, even ICE vehicles have to be lighter, even after decades of shedding weight, to meet increasingly stringent emission norms, and also to compensate for additional weight from new technologies. Replacing metals with plastics is a move many OEMs have taken for some components like fenders, tailgate, fuel tank ec.. There’s more to come under that trend. More in the following story by Syed Shazil Hussain.

Carbon neutrality in motorsport, and track to road tech transfer
Carbon neutrality in motorsport sounds paradoxical, doesn’t it? But Formula E claims to be having a carbon-neutral journey over the past 10 years of its existence. The Championship, started with the objective of also being a “technology laboratory”, is witnessing some transfer of technology from the electric race cars to the EVs driven on roads. Find out more about it, and what Formula E does to remain carbon neutral, in this latest episode of Target Net Zero featuring Julia Pallé, VP – Sustainability, Formula E.

The environment has to be cared for like never before, and the same goes for the focus on technology and innovation in this new era. However, a judicious mix of both is crucial for great achievements.
