Queen Margrethe II set to have her life adapted for television in Denmark’s version of The Crown

The series will start in 1940 when the former monarch was born in Nazi-occupied Denmark. It will depict the young Queen’s life at Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the royal family and will be produced by Danish station TV2. No news of an international distributor has been given as of yet. The royal family have not commented on the show’s production.

Executive Producer Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen told The Guardian what viewers should expect from the show. She said ‘It was not on the cards for the little princess to be queen, but times changed and she became a great queen. Now is the time to tell the magnificent story, which can give us an insight we have not had before.’

The Danish royal family have been dominating headlines of late. On New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe II made the shocking announcement that she would be abdicating in 2024. The popular Queen was crowned in 1972 and became the country’s longest-reigning monarch. On 14 January, her eldest son Frederik became King of Denmark. The event was a much more low-key affair than King Charles III’s coronation in 2023. Nevertheless, it attracted widespread media attention and an outpouring of adulation from the Danish public. The new King and his wife Queen Mary greeted their subjects on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, where they shared a romantic kiss, ushering in a new royal-era for Denmark.
