MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh-Durham International Airport set a new record earlier this week due to the massive influx of travelers in town for Mother’s Day and graduation weekend.
RDU officials said the airport broke a single-day record on Monday with nearly 59,000 passengers passing through the terminals that day.
This marks a 6.1% increase over the previous record set in October 2023, officials said.

Passenger traffic continues to be on the rise with almost 1.3 million travelers flying through RDU in April, which is a 3.7% surge compared to March, as well as a 7.7% improvement over April 2023, according to RDU officials.
“The month of May is the traditional kickoff of the summer travel season, beginning with Mother’s Day and college graduations and running through Memorial Day weekend,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We anticipate the demand for air travel will continue to grow in June and July as airlines expand their schedules and RDU welcomes three new international destinations.”
RDU officials said that Sunday was the busiest day on record at Terminal 1.
