Red Deer’s creativity is spotlighted during Alberta Arts and Culture Days


A wide array of creative events will be happening around Red Deer this month as Alberta Culture Days is celebrated throughout the city.

“We always need more reasons to appreciate — and celebrate — arts and culture in our city,” said Suzanne Hermary, co-ordinator at the Red Deer Arts Council.

With the help of provincial grants, various local cultural groups are able to offer free, engaging and accessible events for people of all ages, she added. For instance, the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery is lifting all program fees for the month of September, including MAGnificent Saturdays.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, special activities will be happening at the Norwegian Laft Hus in Heritage Square, while on Tuesday, Sept 17, there will be a pop-up Concert in the Park held in the square.

Red Deerians can try out improvisation on Sept. 18 with Bull Skit Comedy at the Scott Block in downtown Red Deer.

At the Red Deer Culture Services centre, free art and dance lessons will be offered on Sept. 9, a writers’ support group will be held on Sept. 10, and a scooter tour of downtown Red Deer will happen on Sept. 12.

Lot of different arts and culture events will be happening in the city on Saturday, Sept. 21. These include: the Red Deer Public Library’s Lindy Hop Dance Workshop; a Pemmican-Making Workshop at Fort Normandeau; and a self-guided Studio Tour around Red Deer, where visitors can see visual art demonstrations and check out the unique works of 18 Red Deer artists.

On Sept. 22, there will be a writing workshop with Leslie Greentree at the downtown Red Deer Public library, as well as a local author’s fair. And ReThink Red Deer will hold its Garlic Festival and Market and a harvest dinner at the Common Ground Garden.

Also on Sept. 22, Red Deer’s ladies are invited to don their finest vintage attire for the Tweed and Tassel Bike Tour, starting from the Collicutt Centre. It will be a day of cycling, camaraderie and a chance to get your photo snapped. Presented by the library and Red Deer Association of Bicycle Commuting.

During the last week of September: There will be a Multicultural Market happening at Festival Hall on Sept. 27, featuring arts, crafts, entertainment and food from the city’s diverse cultural communities. This is presented by Care for Newcomers and the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society.

Central Alberta Theatre will perform snippets of its coming season at CATena on  Sept. 28 at the Memorial Centre.

On Sept. 29, a Mad Hatter Tea, featuring favourite Alice in Wonderland characters, will be presented by the Bull Skit Comedy team and the Red Deer Public Library at the G.H. Dawe branch.

Arts and cultural events will also continue all month long at Capstone.

There will be live musical entertainment at the Capstone Night Market on Sept. 13 and 27. On Sept. 20, there will be a Capstone Cabaret performance by the Mike Roland Band at Canada 150 Square. On Sept, 15, 22 and 29, the Central Alberta Chamber Orchestra, the Overdue Blues Band and The McKee 3 will respectively perform. And there will be yoga offered at Capstone on Sept. 10, 17 and 24.
