NHIS is the nation’s longest-running, household-based health survey. NHIS is the gold standard for health care access data, health insurance data, and disability data.

NHIS was redesigned in 2019 to provide better, more meaningful data to users.

Reasons for a survey redesign include (1) increase survey relevance, (2) decrease respondent burden, and (3) enhance data quality. New topics were added to the NHIS questionnaire.
