Old Dominion (4-0) won several close matches to post a 7-0 shutout Sunday at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The Monarchs won both matches on their Midwest trip, beating Wisconsin 5-2.

The Monarchs took the doubles point via 6-3 victories from the tandems of Cosme Rolland De Ravel/Jakob Cadonau and Yanis Moundir/Maxime Mareschal-Hay, overcoming a loss on the top line.

Three ODU players won in straight sets: Connor van Schalkwyk at line 2, Aryan Saleh at 5 and Cadonau at 6. Codie van Schalkwyk at 1, Rolland De Ravel at 3 and Moundir at 4.

Both ODU and Drake saw their seasons end a year ago in the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill. The Sun Belt champion Monarchs lost to Utah on the same day Drake, the Summit League champion, fell to eventual round-of-16 finisher North Carolina.

Monarchs go 1-1 at ITA Kickoff

Old Dominion (1-2) made an early impact in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend, shutting out Iowa State — a team that reached the NCAA Elite Eight last year — 4-0 Saturday on the Cyclones’ indoor courts in Ames before losing 4-0 Sunday to third-ranked Oklahoma State.

The Cyclones lacked a No. 6 player, so ODU got one free point. Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia edged the ITA’s 56th-ranked tandem, Anna Kuearum and Isabella Dunlap, 7-6 (7-4) to give the Monarchs the doubles point.

Johnson beat Kuearum 6-2, 6-2 on line 1 and Rasskouskaia won 6-4, 6-4 on line 5, enabling the Monarchs to clinch the victory. Three competitive singles matches were halted when they did so.

Oklahoma State (4-0) earned a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship’s 16-team field in Seattle by beating the Monarchs. OSU didn’t lose a set.

Johnson was at 5-all in the second set with Anastasiya Komar, the nation’s No. 13 player, when their match was adjourned. Ange Oby Kajuru, ranked second by the ITA, beat Alexandra Viktorovich 6-1, 6-4 on line 2.
