
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Health Department has put out another urgent warning to the public after a fox that attacked multiple people tested positive for rabies.
The fox was observed in the area of Burnet Avenue from roughly October 1 through October 16.
The health department reported the fox dead on Tuesday and submitted it for tested to confirm if it was infected with rabies. The tests indicated the animal did have the virus, causing it to display abnormal behavior and attack individuals.
Video provided to CNY Central by a neighbor shows the fox attacking a man, who attempts to run away. A second video captured by a Ring camera shows the animal run up to a woman getting in her car. The fox then continues to circle the video. The woman honks the horn in an attempt to scare the fox off, but it does not leave.
A public health alert warns all neighbors who had contact with the fox to seek medical treatment. The health alert reads as follows:
If you, your child, or your pet were bitten, scratched, or in direct physical contact with a fox in the Burnet Ave. area in Syracuse from Oct 1-16, 2023, it is crucial to take immediate action! The fox was rabid and is known to have attacked multiple people. The fox is now dead, but those who were exposed MUST seek treatment. Rabies is a FATAL disease if left untreated! Call the Health Department at 315-435-3236 and visit an Emergency Room immediately. Rabies shots are NO COST for those who receive them. Please call your veterinarian if your pet was possibly in contact with the fox.
