Neill’s Hill is to Ballyhackamore what New York City is to the US. It is of its place but not representative of it. NYC is American but unlike anywhere else in America — and Neill’s Hill and Ballyhackamore have the same arrangement.

Yet it was one of the first outposts of cool in east Belfast when it first opened as Aldens well over 20 years ago. It set the scene. Now it is the grande dame of the district, not trying too hard to be on trend or keeping up appearances as all around it style cues and menus bound furiously forward. Instead, it focuses on the stuff we are happy to pay for: good food, service and comfort.
