Ray: This is an issue with a lot of weight on it, both in-story and in meta terms. Jaime just saw his Scarab kill the Blood Scarab and its host, realizing he doesn’t have nearly as much control over his “partner” as he thought. And obviously, the fans and creators are mourning the passing of Jaime’s co-creator Keith Giffen, one of the most influential DC creators of all time. What’s the best way to memorialize him? A jam issue featuring Booster Gold, of course! Five iconic DC artists show up to help Jaime and Booster locate Ted, who has gone missing after recovering from his injuries and has now been lost in the timestream. This sends the two of them—including a bickering Khaji Da—to key points in the past, present, and future of the Blue Beetle legacy. This, of course, includes a trip to the era of the JLI with a guest-appearance from Maxwell Lord before his heel turn.
Future adventures take the heroes to the far future for a team-up with the Legion, to an encounter with Lobo in the timestream, and most powerfully, back to El Paso as Jaime encounters his mother from back when he had just gained his powers. All the artists work very well for their segments, but the choice of original artist Cully Hamner to bring the El Paso segment to life is brilliant. There is so much emotional context in this scene that really reminds me of how excellent this character is (also makes me wish Jaime’s original supporting cast was more present in this book). The stakes are very high in this title, and the final segment between Jaime, Booster, and Ted reminds us of that in a big way before heading back to the present. Now that the initial threat of Blood Scarab has been removed, I am very intrigued to discover what this creative team has planned next for the title.
