This weekend marks a major milestone for The Rialto theater: For the first time in 20 years, live music will once again fill the air.
It’s just one way the historic theater is coming back to life: The Rialto recently unveiled a classic new design, and the popular Rocky Horror Picture Show has also returned.
After The Rialto’s long-time owner retired and the theater closed it doors, Raleigh native Hayes Permar stepped in and saved the theater from permanent closure. Now, he has lots of ideas for keeping the energy and excitement going.
“We had big plans, and a lot of them have come to fruition,” he said. “We’ve had movies, comedy shows, speaker series – and now the live music shows,” he said.
Artists Will Hoge and Sonny Miles are playing this weekend, with tickets and times available on The Rialto website.
The Rialto has a history of bringing live music to Raleigh
Many locals remember live music as part of the history and roots of The Rialto.
“Back in my day, there were so many bands that played there,” said Permar. “Ben Folds played some his first music ever at The Rialto.”
Other nationally-known music artists Tori Amos and folk singer Alison Krauss also played at Raleigh’s Rialto.
“So many great artists,” he said. “The Rialto’s been so many things in its history. You can see some of these old-timey photos with a piano on stage and a live band playing. We’re excited to have this live buzz going.”
Permar says Raleigh has such a vibrant live music scene already, he’s excited for The Rialto to be part of that once again. He hopes to bring in some established national acts, as well provide a platform for local talent to grow.
“I’m really excited about the mix of artists. We’ll have bluegrass, country, R&B, soul, old rock n’ roll,” he said. “A great eclectic mix.”
Christmas movies and music at The Rialto
A glimpse at the website shows that Christmas spirit is also in full swing at The Rialto, with holiday music from Jeanne Jolly & The Mistletoes on Dec. 22 and The Embers playing on Dec. 23.
Christmas movies will also bring holiday cheer and nostalgia to The Rialto.
“We’ll have all your favorites,” said Permar. “Home Alone, Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life.”
He says they will be announcing the schedule soon – and to get tickets quickly, because he believes these movies will sell out quickly.
