Rising car thefts in Baltimore trigger surge in insurance rates and policy cancellations

As the number of stolen cars rises across the city of Baltimore, so do insurance rates.

According to Commissioner Worley on Monday, only 60% of the almost 10,000 cars stolen this year have been recovered.

FOX45 News spoke with Hayward Howard, SVP of Maury, Donnelly, and Parr Inc.

Howard says that cost is in the millions of dollars, handed down to the insured.

“Let’s take an average vehicle cost of $20 thousand. That’s 200 million dollars of new vehicles purchased in Baltimore City.”

The insured, seeing that by way of premium increases, according to Howard.

“We’re seeing average increases probably somewhere in the 10 to 12 percent range. And there’s no expectation based on what we’re being told that increases in premiums are going to subside,” said Howard.

Along with premiums going up, some insurance companies are deciding not to insure Baltimore city vehicles altogether, or certain vehicles.

Some insurance companies, like Progressive and State Farm, are not insuring Hyundais and Kia vehicles in several major cities.

Brenellee Knight spoke with FOX45 in July shortly after her Kia was stolen.

Just a week before, Knight received a letter that her policy would be canceled if she did not upgrade to the new dash system.

As a college student, Knight could not afford to, causing her policy to be canceled, and leaving her to pay for the damages to her vehicle out of pocket.
