Robert Pearl assumes leadership at Westshore Arts Council; new programs for artists

WESTLAKE, Ohio — The Westshore Arts Council has welcomed Robert Pearl as president of its board of directors, heralding a new chapter of creativity and community engagement within the West Side arts sphere.

An esteemed oil painter and dedicated educator, Pearl’s appointment signals a concerted effort to reinvigorate the council’s initiatives and expand its influence.

“Our aim is to enhance and build upon our past accomplishments,” said Pearl, emphasizing a commitment to elevating existing programs while actively seeking fresh avenues of artistic expression.

Pearl, known for his mastery in oil painting, has not only honed his skills as an artist, but has also imparted his expertise through teaching. Anticipating the launch of a new class, Pearl reaffirms his dedication to nurturing local artistic talent.

Established in 1984, the Westshore Arts Council has been a stalwart in enriching the community through diverse artistic endeavors. Celebrating its 22nd annual art exhibit this year (always in August), the event now encompasses a diverse array of categories, including digital art and block printing.

“Maintaining the vibrancy of arts on the West Side remains our primary focus,” said Pearl, highlighting the council’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing the cultural landscape of the community.

At last August’s exhibit, 48 artists showcased their work, presenting a total of 98 pieces categorized into semi-professional and professional divisions.

The event, open to the public without charge, not only provides exposure for artists, but also serves as a platform for emerging talents, particularly young artists seeking recognition.

The exhibit underwent meticulous judging across categories such as watercolor, photography, and oil or acrylic, with each judge being paid a $100 fee. Artists’ prizes were awarded, with first place receiving $100, second place receiving $50, and an honorable mention receiving a $25 gift card to Michaels art store.

Pearl envisions expanded engagement with local high schools, aiming to broaden artistic involvement, particularly among individuals younger than 18.

“Our efforts at Westlake High School — lectures and demos — were well-received, and we aim to extend these initiatives,” he said.

“We’re exploring programs tailored for those aged 18 and under, considering our current exhibit caters to those 18 and older.”

Expanding the board of directors beyond the visual arts, particularly to include talents from the music realm, also is a priority for Pearl, who aims to enrich the council’s creative spectrum.
