Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 is taking significant steps to address the mental well-being of its students, following concerning findings from a 2023 survey. Survey Sheds Light on Student Well-being

Based on the BC Adolescent Health Survey, the data paints a stark picture of student health over the past five years. While 75% of students still rate their overall health as good, this is a decrease from 81% in 2018. More alarmingly, only 62% of students now rate their mental health as good or excellent, a significant drop from 76%. The survey also revealed increasing trends in vaping, with 36% of students admitting to using vapes, and a growing number of students skipping breakfast and school, which can negatively impact their academic performance and physical health.

In response to these troubling trends, the district, in collaboration with Interior Health, is rolling out the ‘Preventure’ program for Grade 8 students at DTSS. This innovative initiative focuses on personality-based, strengths-based prevention, offering students valuable decision-making tools through participation in targeted workshops. The program has shown promise in reducing alcohol and drug use among youth. Alongside Preventure, the district launched its Mental Health in Schools strategy last fall, aiming to enhance social/emotional learning and mental health literacy among students. This strategy addresses the need for accessible mental health services and aims to mitigate the stigma associated with seeking help.

Future Directions and Community Support

Looking ahead, the district is committed to evaluating and realigning its counseling services and academic support to better serve students’ needs, particularly in high school planning and post-secondary transitions. A positive note from the survey is that 84% of students were able to identify at least one caring adult in their community, underscoring the importance of support networks. Additionally, the district is considering expanding educational topics to include sexual health, responding to student inquiries for more information in this area.

The Rocky Mountain School District No. 6’s proactive measures reflect a dedicated effort to confront and reverse the declining trend in student mental health. By addressing the root causes and providing targeted support, the district hopes to foster a healthier, more resilient student body. As these programs unfold, the impact on students’ well-being will be closely monitored, with the ultimate goal of ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive both in school and in life.
