Karla Rosas, an International Baccalaureate visual arts student from Dalton High School, is the proud recipient of this year’s Spigel Prize for Excellence in the Visual Arts, awarded by the Creative Arts Guild as part of the Student Arts Expo.
The prize, named in honor of Bernice Spigel, the inaugural executive director of the Creative Arts Guild, is an annual recognition given to a high school senior in Dalton/Whitfield County or Murray County who demonstrates excellence in the field of visual arts.
“The scholarship means that I am capable of creating art, and I might have a chance of making it as an artist,” Rosas said. “An artist’s job is not guaranteed. It’s all based on chance. Preferences. I’ve noticed a lot of people prefer realism and realistic art. Well, for my art, it’s very stylized. It’s based on cubism and expressionism.”
To qualify for the Spigel Prize, students must submit a comprehensive application, including a biography and artist statement, a portfolio showcasing their work, and undergo an interview with a panel of judges. This selection process ensures that the recipient stands out for their dedication and talent in the visual arts.
Rosas, a Dalton native, developed an interest in art from an early age. Her commitment to creating art deepened during high school art classes, when she began to take her artistic pursuits more seriously. Her distinctive artistic style draws inspiration from cubism, expressionism and surrealism, reflecting the defiance of conventional expectations and the introduction of new concepts and techniques by artists from these movements.
Rosas’ impressive body of work is showcased in Gallery ONE11 at the Creative Arts Guild as part of the Student Arts Expo. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
