The 31st annual Saint Louis Art Fair takes place in downtown Clayton this year on Sept. 6 through Sept. 8. “A Celebration of Art Since 1994,” as its tagline states, the Saint Louis Art Fair has drawn crowds of approximately 130,000 attendees every year who come to enjoy the art, performances and local food options.
The fair’s executive director, Sarah Umlauf, is looking forward to another exciting festival in 2024. “The art fair is a time-honored tradition and beloved event, and we have strived for excellence since the beginning,” she says.
This year, around 200 award-winning artists will be featured. Only about 12% of applicants are accepted into the show, making this one of the most competitive shows in the nation.
“What’s exciting is the variety of art that people are going to see,” Umlauf says. “There’s wearable art from fiber artists and jewelry, and fine art including painting, photography, glass and ceramics. It’s really exciting to see so many styles on display.”

Live entertainment will also be a highlight of the weekend. The fair is partnering with Music at the Intersection to provide a total of four musical acts – two on Friday and two on Saturday.
“You’re going to see some great performances [on] our Main Stage this year,” Umlauf says. “From DJs to bluegrass, you can find what you’d like to listen to. The performances will really be a celebration of the cultural diversity of the St. Louis region.”
A children’s area returns this year with plenty to engage the entire family. “The Creative Castle has so many activities for children – not just crafts, but also music activities,” Umlauf says. “The Repertory Theatre [will] lead a really fun dress-up activity for the kids. There’s going to be fun with balloons – we’re working with a performance artist Molly Balloons, who will be creating a fun parade of sorts in the grounds.”
Another festival highlight is the local restaurants and food trucks offering bites and drinks to delight patrons. “We’re going to have fantastic restaurants on our Restaurant Row,” Umlauf says. “We recently brought back our food trucks to the art fair, too, so you’re going to see those on South Meramec in addition to Restaurant Row.”
Umlauf adds: “We’re hoping for the same gorgeous weather as last year, but we know, rain or shine, the art lovers in the community will come support the fair. We have a great community of art supporters that come from near and far.”
