The son of a TV producer Sam Haskell—who once served as an agent to a host of Hollywood stars—has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman’s dismembered torso was discovered in a Los Angeles dumpster.
Samuel Haskell Jr., 35, was taken into custody on Wednesday after a man scavenging for recyclables found the woman’s torso in Encino, approximately 5 miles from the suspect’s Tarzana home. Haskell Jr.’s wife and in-laws are currently missing. His three children were found safely at school.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Detective Efren Gutierrez said at a press conference that investigators believe the torso discovered in the dumpster on Wednesday morning may be Haskell Jr.’s wife, Mei Haskell. The identification of the human remains is ongoing, according to police.
Haskell Jr.’s father is a onetime Hollywood agent, who is the founder and president of Magnolia Hill Productions. The company has produced a number of Dolly Parton specials and two revived specials featuring The Waltons.
Before launching the company, Haskell Sr. forged a successful career at powerhouse agency William Morris, where he rose to overseeing its worldwide television unit. He also served as the CEO of Miss America between 2015 and 2017.
Speaking a press conference on Wednesday, LAPD Detective Gutierrez said: “If a murder suspect is dismembering a body, it’s to delay identification.”
Mei Haskell’s missing parents, Yanxiang Wang and Gaoshen Li, lived with the couple and their three elementary-aged children.
“They would normally be home in these hours, and attempts have been made to contact them by phone, by cellphone and no answer,” Gutierrez said of the couple. “And the same with Mei. She is unaccounted for.”
An unnamed person reported seeing body parts in bags near the Haskell family’s home. However, when police arrived at the scene, the bags had gone.
The following morning, at around around 6:15 a.m., the woman’s torso was found in the dumpster. According to police, video evidence and vehicle information led them to Haskell Jr.’s home, where it is said that officers discovered evidence of a crime, including the presence of blood.
Haskell Jr., who Gutierrez said was arrested at the Westfield Topanga shopping mall in Canoga Park, was booked on one count of suspicion of murder. He is currently being held on $2 million bail, and is due in court on November 13.
Newsweek has contacted the LAPD via email for comment.
The gruesome case stands in stark contrast to the glamorous career of Haskell Sr., who has enjoyed decades-long success in Hollywood.
Haskell Sr.’s company biography describes him as being “widely known as ‘the nice guy in Hollywood.’” He stepped down as head of the Miss America organization after it was discovered that he had sent emails criticizing past winners.
Per his bio, Haskell Sr. was appointed to the position of Worldwide Head of Television at William Morris in 1999. In that post, he packages a number of classic network projects, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Everybody Loves Raymond, Lost, Murphy Brown, Suddenly Susan, King of Queens, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Mad About You, and Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.
Additionally, Haskell represented a host of stars while at the agency, including a member of the British royal family.
