This winter, the San Antonio Botanical Garden will debut “Illuminate,” its newest holiday light exhibition in collaboration with acclaimed Chinese Lantern Festival producer Tianyu Arts and Culture.
Starting on Nov. 29, visitors can journey through a mile-long path of glowing displays that blend art, culture, and nature while also experiencing various interactive light installations. The event will run most weekdays and weekends until Jan. 12, 2025.
President and CEO of the San Antonio Botanical Garden Katherine Trumble said the colorful showcase provides the city with a unique way to spend quality time together.
“Illuminate brings a unique blend of art and nature to San Antonio, providing a space where families and individuals can connect, enjoy the beauty of the Garden, and be inspired by breathtaking artistry,” Trumble said in a press release. “It’s truly a gift to our city, and we’re honored to be able to share it.”
Previously, the Garden featured the holiday light show “Lightscape” during the holiday season.
But this year, its buzzing ecosystem introduces a twist on the seasonal tradition, showcasing hundreds of larger-than-life creatures and handcrafted lanterns produced by Tianyu Arts and Culture. The company is among the first to bring authentic Chinese Lantern traditions to the U.S.
Partnering with habitats worldwide, the company invites those who view their eye-catching displays to join them in “creating a sustainable world and protecting the animals that inhabit it,” its website states.
Winding paths at the Garden lead you through different worlds, yet whichever you take—butterflies, walking sticks, and towering armadillos line your path. Instrumental music and holiday tunes accompany you on your journey, making the experience all the more magical.
A unique aspect of the exhibit is its emphasis on interaction—illuminated swings, motion-activated sculptures, games, and glowing tunnels are available throughout your visit, making the event exciting for all ages. However, an adult must accompany anyone under 18.
Admission to “Illuminate” and the Garden are separate. “Illuminate” is a ticketed evening event with admissions starting at 5:30 p.m. Entry times are available every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 9 p.m., according to the Garden’s website. Once you are admitted, you can stay as long as you like.
