The Sandy Springs Arts Foundation will present a free visual and performing arts showcase of talented students from four public schools in Sandy Springs on Feb. 8.
“ARTBEAT … Where Students Sing, Dance, Create, and Imagine” will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Byers Theatre in the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at 1 Galambos Way, according to a Sandy Springs Arts Foundation (SSAF) news release.
More than 450 students from Ridgeview and Sandy Springs Charter Middle Schools, and Riverwood International Charter and North Springs Charter High Schools will share some of their best visual arts, and performances in singing, music, dancing, and acting. More than 100 pieces of 2D and 3D visual artworks will be on display, the release said. Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Rock Bands members will perform music.
“Our ARTBEAT event will be a fabulous opportunity for our Sandy Springs-located students to showcase their talent and passion for the arts,” said SSAF board member and community leader Jan Collins said, according to the release. “Having the opportunity to perform on the grand stage of the Byers Theatre and display their art in the Byers lobby will be a thrill for students and audiences alike.”
Attendees are asked to bring a box of crayons or colored pencils to donate to elementary schools instead of an entrance fee, according to the release.
Las year the SSAF donated $50,000 to participating schools. The schools used the funds to get art-related items such as instruments, paints, consumables, and software.
Seven of the 11 public schools in Sandy Springs are Title 1 because approximately 40% of the school population comes from economically challenged households.
Research shows the positive effects of the arts are beneficial for low-socioeconomic status students. At-risk students who take art are significantly more likely to stay in school and ultimately to get college degrees, the SSAF release said.
