SANIBEL, Fla. — SCCF’s Wildlife and Habitat Management Department is conducting acoustic monitoring of bat species on Sanibel Island.
In collaboration with the Miami Bat Lab, ultrasonic recording boxes are being placed around the island to identify bat species in specific areas.
These boxes record ultrasonic vocalizations of bats and analyze them to identify species present.
Bats are crucial in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and provide essential benefits that enhance human well-being.
The Brazilian free-tail bat is commonly found in southwest Florida and North America. This fascinating creature weighs between 7-12 grams and can consume up to 50-100% of its body weight in insects every night, potentially eating 2,800 – 4,800 mosquitoes per bat per night!
Bats are essential pollinators and seed dispersers while also serving as a natural pest control for species such as peaches, bananas, and agaves.
